Bike Lane Violations in Chicago
This dryclean delivery guy saw me taking this picture
2501 North Clark Street Chicago, IL 60614, Chicago, IL
He gave me the Stink-Eye as I passed him getting back into his truck.
A half block later he paced me for a hundred feet, then buzzed me at nearly full throttle at about 6" from my handlebar. 6" is giving him the benefit of the doubt. I could have pushed my elbow out just a little and touched his van as it roared by. I had already moved into the door danger zone to get away from him so he was definitely in the bike lane as he buzzed me.
I don't know if this guy just buzzes every bike like this or just ones that just took a picture of his illegally parked van in the bike lane.
You be the judge
Armored car just idling in the bike lane
2301-2317 N Clark St Chicago, IL 60614, Chicago, IL
There was plenty of parking just 20 feet in front of this truck. This guy must feel empowered to just block the bike lane (and the traffic lane) here.
I can has ladder rack
2135 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL 60647, Chicago, IL
This guy is only a tire and a half in the lane -he's just too lazy to pull over close to the curb.
Maybe he had to check out tickets at the Congress? Too cool for school!
Needs to work out badly!
2310 W Logan Blvd Chicago, IL 60647, Chicago, IL
Car is parked on 2300 block of W. Logan Blvd in front of the Gym and Target @ 6:03 PM in a bike lane/No Parking zone.
It is totally blocking the bike lane and also part of the only traffic lane too.
As you can see this is a BAD spot to block the bike lane. The other biker rode around the car as I was snapping the picture and didn't see the car right behind him who had to pass him in the Left Turn Only lane and soon after that over the double-yellow of oncoming traffic. This illegal parker almost killed someone while I was taking this picture
Too cool to pull forward
210 e randolph, Chicago, IL
CDOT recently restriped the bike lane to allow for curb parking on Randolph. But I guess the need to facilitate tourists is more important than the need to move bicyclist safely across town.
If the bus does it, I can do it, too
2100 s archer, Chicago, IL
The bus is waiting to pick up people to go to a casino. What exactly are you waiting for right here?
Gotta get my Java
1430 W. Taylor, Chicago, IL
When I was at this Starbucks (for about 45 minutes), I counted at least 20 cars parking in the bike lane (3 of which were police cars, and 1 Cook County Sheriff) to run into to Starbucks.
Detectives need coffee, too
1430 w taylor, Chicago, IL
But they can still get it by parking legally.
On the curb doesn't make it any better
802 south halsted street, Chicago, IL
You're not making things better by putting your tires on the curb.
Hotel bike lane
400 n dearborn, Chicago, IL
Hotels cause a lot of bike lane blocking. On Adams and LaSalle, the hotel traffic blocks the bus lane.
Elston bike lane
4510 n elston, Chicago, IL
Elston Avenue is a great bike lane because it has fewer lights than most streets, but the copious car washes and auto service joints make for a lot of bike lane blocking.
All in the name of delivered groceries
1900 s halsted, Chicago, IL
What is the solution to delivery vehicles blocking bike lanes? Their presence is surely more important than a private citizen's vehicle that doesn't contribute to the economy.
I really don't understand
2910 s halsted, Chicago, IL
I think what this park needs is a loading zone. Except, without police enforcement, it would be pointless.
You're doing it wrong
2900 s halsted, Chicago, IL
Cars belong in parking spaces, not the bike lane. Take note!
Baseball game idler
2950 s halsted, Chicago, IL
There are baseball games in McGuane Park almost every night. And every time there's a game, there's sure to be at least one driver blocking the southbound bike lane on Halsted.
Village Cycle Center, AGAIN!
1337 N. Wells Street, Chicago, IL
This rental truck easily had 4 feet on the curb side where they could have parked it instead of blocking the lane. This is right outside of Village Cycle Center where they were registering for the L.A.T.E. ride. That`s right, a BIKE shop and a BIKE ride where blocking the entire BIKE lane. This is not the first time that VCC has blocked the lane while I was riding up Wells. They have people park there to load up there bikes all of the time. And there is always plenty of room to pull all of the way over. It is enough that I will not shop there anymore. They should be embarrassed.
Skinny Bitch in Lexus, 4700 N. Elston
Elston and Leland (4700 North Elston), Chicago, IL
This one wasn't parked in the bike lane, but I'm sure that would have been her next trick. After I signaled to turn left from Elston onto a side street (no cars in sight), she turned from another side street onto Elston, then shouted "GET OUT OF THE FUCKIN' ROAD!!!" When I informed her (in between expletives) that I had the right to get in the left lane in order to turn left, she said "not here, you don't." She then accused me of being jealous of her, undoubtedly because of her massive IQ and her fashionable car. I guess it made too much sense for her to actually walk to the X-Sport Fitness on Elston.
IL 51812 parked in crosswalk on Kenneth
Montrose and Kenneth, Chicago, IL
Parked next to fire hydrant on North Kenneth, completely blocking crosswalk at Montrose, a very busy street. Firefighter plates!!!
& in a no parking zone
Taylor and Wood, Chicago, IL
The USPS truck across the street is also blocking the east bound bike lane
Semi parked on 4200 block of N. Elston
4200 block of North Elston, Chicago, IL
Trucks in the bike lane between Montrose and Irving are a daily occurrence -- however, this truck seems to have taken it to a new level. Note the absence of license tags and the fact that the semi is jutting well into the automobile lane, in addition to covering the entire bike lane.
Irma J Tours
1747 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL
Driver napping in one of the passenger seats? This appears to have been charter by Baxter.
Another delivery
1307 s wabash, Chicago, IL
Ever hear of loading zones? Get one and stay out of the bike lane!
Where there're condos, there're taxis
1341 s wabash, Chicago, IL
Reasons not to use the Wabash bike lane: Lots of taxis and double parkers. Also, bad pavement and tons of bumps.
Reasons to use the Wabash bike lane: More room and less traffic than State Street.
All he needed was coffee and a muffin
3640 n halsted, Chicago, IL
The driver couldn't be bothered to park legally to get his coffee and muffin (or whatever breakfast food) at Whole Foods at Halsted and Waveland. Jerk.
CTA Bus #12
1747 West Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL
An everyday occurrence, the CTA #12 buses driving the entire length of the 1700 block of West Roosevelt in the bike lane.
Evanston Police visiting a 7-11
817 Davis, Evanston, IL
The officer was inside a 7-11 for at least 20 minutes just chatting with the store clerk. Must like those slurpies!
Two wheels is the same as four
660 w washington, Chicago, IL
To me, your blocking the bike if at least one entire tire footprint is inside the lane, and not touching the stripes.
another UPS violation
Taylor and Wood, Chicago, IL
I didn't even notice the driver when I took the picture otherwise I would have mentioned it is illegal in Illinois to block a bike lane.
parked on bike lane on elston
elston and ashland, Chicago, IL
ok so it's a crap picture but it doesn't matter because when i came back it was gone so glad the police did their job! i did my best with the photo considering it was raining pretty hard when i did. sorry for the finger! anyway, this guy was parked on the corner of elston and ashland facing south. it's a light blue buick.
Street & Sanitation Van
1430 W. Taylor St, Chicago, IL
Not only does he block the bikelane but is also in front of a fire hydrant. I mentioned to him he was in violation of the law and his response was "someone is in the van and I won't do it next time." Once he saw me taking this picture, he had the person in the van move it (thanks!). While I was at this Starbucks, over the course of about 40 minutes, at least 20 cars pulled up and parked/stood in the bike lane to run in and get coffee, etc. There were often 3 or 4 in a row blocking the bikelane.
CTA #152 Bus - my old friend
3620 Elston, Chicago, IL
Once again the 152 bus standing in the bike lane around 5am on 06/09/2009 as the driver reads the newspaper (probably trying to find out how Patti, wife of the ex-Gov, is doing on 'I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here'). Got another extended honk as I called out - Get out of the bike lane!
