FYI to all you posters about 1550 S. Blue Island bike lane perps, the building is in debate with the 2 Alderman Offices involved in the underpasses surrounding the building to debate if the bike lanes are miss posted. All of the other areas in between and past the underpasses have both a bike lane and also a parking lane closest to the curb. SO, given that information the owners are debating and requesting that the bike lanes be properly marked as the rest of the street is to include a parking AND a bike lane. Hence, the reason none of us "BIKE LANE PERPS" are getting cited. Secondly, the lanes are barely marked, you CANNOT cite someone for unmarked lanes. What are we, mindreaders? I dare say not! I will give you that the northbound side is marked and if you will notice, we do not park there any longer. However, the southbound side is NOT marked as a bike lane but merely a single white line, similar, if not exactly as the rest of Blue Island where those cars are free to park WITHOUT citation and WITH a properly marked bike lane. And lastly, thanks, I like my vanity plates.
I couldn't agree more. It makes sense to allow cars to park on either side of the street just like the 1400 and 1600 blocks of Blue Island. It would be worse if cars DIDN'T park there... driving maniacs would treat it as a second lane, which I've seen happen.
I'm happy that most motorists have stopped parking in the northbound lane. However, until the city repaints these lanes (on top of the existing design, or with a new design), we will continue to photograph the vehicles parked in the bike lane and notify the police.
Also, please note, an additional violation that occurs in this area (albeit very seldom) is parking underneath the viaduct.
folks, there is one thing that is certain and is NOT up for debate with aldermen solis and fioretti (or anyone else), and that is whether or not this bike lane is "miss posted."
the bike lane was established on this section of blue island in 2001 to protect cyclists along this dangerous stretch of road. it has been on the the city's official bike maps for many years, and it is listed as an existing bike lane on the city website:
http://www.chicagobikes.org/existingbikelanes.html
i'd also like to point out that motorists illegally using bike lanes as an additional lane of car traffic is no reason to allow motorists to illegally park in bike lanes.
that is like saying that we should allow drug dealers to sell crack next to an elementary school, since if we prevent them from selling crack they will just sell heroin.
Aquae, your last argument is so hyperbolic, I won't even comment.
As far as existing bike lanes are concerned, there are existing bike lanes on the 1400 and 1600 blocks of Blue Island as well... both of which allow parked cars along the curb. Why should the 1500 block be different, especially the space in front of Testa or across the street from Testa?
